An Investment
In February 2009, President Barack Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as an investment in the country’s future. The act aims to save and create jobs, modernize health care, improve schools, update infrastructure and invest in clean energy technologies.
At the U.S. Department of Energy’s Hanford Site, Recovery Act funding will help complete cleanup along the Columbia River, prevent contaminated groundwater from entering the river, finish key projects that will support shrinking Hanford’s active cleanup footprint and prepare for consistent delivery of waste to the Waste Treatment Plant.
An Opportunity
Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS), the Hanford contractor responsible for cleanup of 53 million gallons of waste stored in 177 underground tanks, has received $322 million in Recovery Act funding for environmental remediation at the Hanford Site.
Recovery Act funding provides a tremendous opportunity for WRPS to reduce the risk to the environment and to invest in the workforce and infrastructure needed to carry out its long-term mission for the DOE Office of River Protection.
WRPS is taking a holistic approach to its 10-year mission, and the purpose of the company’s contract will not change with the addition of Recovery Act funding. Money awarded though the Recovery Act will be used to complete projects already included in the company’s planned work scope.
Recovery Act funding at Hanford provides opportunity to:
- U
pgrade tank farm infrastructure - Extend the life of nuclear operating facilities
- To prepare for Waste Treatment Plant operation
- Create jobs and career opportunities
- Create a safer, more efficient workplace for tank farm employees
An Employer
Recovery Act funds have allowed WRPS to provide jobs for hundreds of individuals with science and engineering backgrounds.
